CHRISTIAN WILLIAMS – heart kid
22 year old Christian was first diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy in July 2007 at age 19. He had been suffering blackouts, severe palpitations and chest pains for several years but was not diagnosed and was admitted to hospital after his heart started to shut down in 2007. As a result of an ectopic pacemaker (a genetic heart defect) Christian faced a heart transplant until he had corrective surgery and spent months in cardiac rehabilitation programs.
Despite his condition he was able to be a member of several Australian and Victorian lacrosse teams and also Captain of the U19 Australian team. Since then, Christian was forced to find a new sport which played less stress on his heart or give up sport entirely so he chose hammer throwing with his first year representing Victoria at National Championships and spent time as a training partner to his mentor/coach Olympic Champion Koji Murofushi in Japan. He was named a ‘Remarkable Australian’ and Olympic Spirit Ambassador in 2008 and was an Olympic Torchbearer in Canberra. Christian is working hard to become the first ever Olympic Athlete with heart failure and compete at the 2012 London Olympics. Managing his condition is a constant struggle with constant medication and dietary restrictions but he is still able to compete at the elite level. He spends his time teaching physical education at primary schools around Melbourne and training twice a day in preparation for this year’s Australian Championships.
Christian is the eldest of 8 children, being the only boy with 7 sisters!

Shaun Wilson-Miller – heart kid
At 14, Shaun Wilson-Miller knows that every day is a gift. In August 2008 Shaun became the second Australian child, and the first since Fiona Coote in 1986, to have a second heart transplant. Shaun was born with a congenital heart defect. Years of treatment and complex surgery failed to repair the damage and so he underwent his first transplant at the age of 8. A second transplant was required just 5 years later at age 13. Thanks to the care and support from The Royal Children’s Hospital and Heart Kids, Shaun is now happy, healthy and enjoying life.
Shaun lives in Dandenong with his dad and he is currently in Year 8 at Carwatha College. Shaun hopes to be a nurse one day so can help other people who are sick. Shaun believes that being positive helps you through life’s toughest challenges. "People should live life to the full because you never know what is going to happen". Shaun loves the way ‘Heartkids’ manages to care for so many sick kids and knows first-hand how their support helps kids get through the tough times.
Erin Cervelli – heart kid
Heart kid Erin Cervelli, 28, is not only a heart kid but a very passionate HeartKids member, Victorian Committee member and volunteer at many of HeartKids functions from Christmas parties to the Good Friday Appeal. Erin’s focus is the HeartKids Teen Camp which she has seen grow from its beginnings in Victoria to a National Camp with the full backing of Heartkids Australia.
Erin’s journey started when she first walked into 7 West at the Royal Children’s Hospital as a five year old for a VSD repair. It was open-heart surgery – the good news, however, is that in theory, she is now cured. Since then, Erin has dealt with the emotional and physical scars from her surgery, giving her vital understanding and skills she uses in her position as Camp Co-ordinator and all round support person for the teens and young adults she encounters through HeartKids.

Outpatient Appointments at the Royal Children’s Hospital
When your child has an appointment to see a cardiologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital you will receive a letter detailing the tests the cardiologist has requested and confirming your appointment time. If you are unable to attend please call (03) 9345 6400 to reschedule so that your slot can be reallocated. If your child is having multiple tests in addition to seeing the cardiologist you could be at the clinic for as long as 2-3 hours. Please come prepared with all you need for the visit, for example babies bottles, snacks, strollers, special toys etc.
Below is a brief description of tests your child may have and an idea of how long the test will take and what preparations you may need to make.
ECG
An ECG is a recording of the heart rhythm that involves placing ECG electrodes (stickers) on the arms, legs and across the chest. A recording is then made showing the electrical activity of the heart. It requires being as still as possible when the recording is taken. It is useful if parents of babies or small children bring something to help achieve this eg: a bottle or toys. The test should take 3-5 minutes.
ECHOCARDIOGRAM
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart to look at the structure size and blood flow of the chambers and associated blood vessels. Your child needs to be settled during the study so it is helpful with babies and infants to have a bottle or dummy available for them. Maybe a favourite toy would be useful for small children. For older children DVDs are available or you could bring a particular favourite. The study normally takes about 30-40 minutes, but this may vary.
24 HOUR HOLTER ECG MONITOR
A 24 Hour Holter ECG recording requires wearing a recorder (about the size of a pager) with ECG electrodes (stickers) attached to the chest for 24 hours. In some cases you may be required to wear the recorder for a longer period. You will not need to stay in the hospital and will be free to leave once your appointment is finished and the recorder has been fitted. The technologist who fits the recorder will discuss with you how it should be returned. The recorder must not get wet so a bath or shower is not possible (nor is swimming) until it is removed. An otherwise normal day’s activity is possible. It may be requested that some exercise by undertaken while wearing the recorder to check the heart rhythm during exercise as well. You will also be asked to keep a diary of activities and events while wearing the recorder. It will take approximately 10-15 minutes to fit the recorder and explain the procedure.
EXERCISE TEST
This test assesses how the heart responds to exercise i.e. an increase in heart rate. This is done by recording an ECG while walking and running on a treadmill. Blood pressure is monitored during and after exercise and sometimes oxygen saturation also. Please wear or bring something comfortable to exercise in (including comfortable shoes) eg t-shirt and shorts or track pants and running shoes. A shower is available after the test. The test will take approximately 30-40 minutes.
PACEMAKER
ECG electrodes (stickers) are attached to the chest and a special computer id used to “talk” to the pacemaker. This ensures the pacemaker is working with the heart’s own rhythm to pace the heart in the correct way as programmed by the cardiologist. The pacemaker is checked at regular intervals and may be reprogrammed as felt necessary. The test will take 15-30 minutes.
CHEST X-RAY
If your cardiologist has requested a chest x-ray this will be done in another department and may take 20-30 minutes.

HeartKids Auxiliary Tin Collection
Please help HeartKids Auxiliary raise money for the Good Friday Appeal
The Royal Children’s Hospital Auxiliary have agreed to assist us in raising funds for our auxiliary account at the hospital by giving our members Good Friday Appeal collection tins with all funds going to the HeartKids Auxiliary account.
The tins will have the Good Friday Appeal sticker on them and will be numbered. The tins are available for any member, their family or friends who would like to place a tin in their place of business eg. small business reception, counter, kindergarten office, school office etc. Although the tins will be marked Good Friday Appeal, all the funds in these specifically numbered tins will go directly to the HeartKids Auxiliary account where the funds are spent in the cardiac ward at the hospital.
The tins can be distributed immediately yet MUST be returned before Good Friday.
The tins MUST NOT be used for door knocking, corner streets etc and MUST only be used in a place of business as the Good Friday Appeal Tins used on street corners and door knocking etc are distributed by the Good Friday Appeal Committee and are numbered differently. People requiring tins from them must register with them before being sent a tin.
The RCH Auxiliary will manage the whole project from beginning to end with all funds once counted before the Good Friday Appeal, deposited into the HeartKids Auxiliary account with members being advised of the amount raised.
If you are interested in obtaining a tin, please fill out the Expression of Interest Form and return to HeartKids either by fax or mail and we will pass on to the RCH Auxiliary office who will send the tin to you. Once your tin is full, you will need to contact the Auxiliary office so they can organise another tin to be distributed to you.
All tins MUST be returned to the Auxiliary office before Good Friday next year.
If you have any queries, please contact Sue Manson at the RCH Auxiliary office on 9345 5188.

Sad Links
Sadly, sometimes heart children die.
Sometimes families and friend no matter how much they might wish to, can’t be the one you need to turn to. You may not have lost your child but maybe a friend has and you want to help but can’t quite find the place to start. The following are links to sites in both Australia and overseas that have been started to help families, both parents and siblings who have lost a child.
We wish that we did not have to add these links but are very grateful that we are able.
Sids and Kids VIC is an organisation that offers grief/bereavement counselling to families who have experienced the sudden and unexpected death of a child up to six years of age; there are groups also in the Hunter and other states of Australia. This site was suggested by a member who has used it and found them to be helpful.

The Compassionate Friends was founded in Coventry, England, in 1969, by Rev. Simon Stephens, Assistant to the Chaplain in the Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital. Simon noticed that the intensity and duration of parental grief was much greater than that of others who lost loved ones. He brought together two couples whose children had died at the same time, hoping they might comfort one another. It worked; each parent understood the pain the others were going through, and they were able to support and help one another as no one else could do. In time, the two couples reached out to other grieving parents, and The Compassionate Friends was founded. Compassionate Friends has Australian Offices.

HeartKids Corporate Membership is State based and is open to all businesses, associations and organisations.
In today’s competitive world, it’s important to get the balance right. Lending your organisation’s support to a worthy cause like HeartKids not only builds your reputation as a ‘good corporate citizen’, it makes your staff and clients feel positive about you, so they’re more likely to want to work for, and with, you.
Aligning your company with HeartKids gives your company the chance to promote your commitment to social responsibility and share the opportunity to express that commitment with your staff.
By taking up the opportunity to make a difference, your staff will not only gain great satisfaction, they’ll have the chance to build better relationships with their colleagues, utilise their skills in a new and positive way, and perhaps demonstrate some new skills that will build their own reputation and regard within the workplace.

Volunteers
VOLUNTEERING WITH HEARTKIDS
HeartKids Victoria provides support, advocacy, equipment and research for kids with heart disease and their families, but it is volunteers like you who make it possible.
Apart from employing people for specific and specialised roles such as direct Support Services and Event management, Heartkids is almost entirely composed of volunteers. From Board membership, Marketing, Financial management and Strategic planning, to work place activities, Family Fun Days, supporting one of our functions, secretarial work and newsletter distribution, we value and rely on volunteers. HeartKids Victoria offers a wealth of opportunities to become involved as a volunteer..… whether it’s regular hours in a week, or a day a year or as a ‘one off’, all of it is appreciated.
Together, we can make a real difference. Contact Di Gillies, our volunteer co-ordinator on 0438 002 749 or email and learn more about how you can help. Don’t forget to tell others about us and help spread the awareness that will ensure better outcomes for all heart kids.
ACTIVITIES YOU COULD CONSIDER

Bequest
What is a bequest?
A bequest is a gift that can be either named or anonymous. It is contained within a Will and specifically reserves part of an estate for a particular beneficiary.
A bequest may be:
- a sum of money from your estate
- a fixed percentage of your estate
- the residue of your estate
- shares, bonds, life insurance policies, artworks
- other personal property
Whilst we are mindful of the personal and sensitive nature of a Will, HeartKids appreciates knowledge of your intention to provide for HeartKids in the form of a Bequest so that we can thank you in your lifetime. All correspondence and information will be held in the strictest confidence.
HeartKids and bequests
HeartKids relies on the generosity of the community in order to run our activities for our Heartkids and their families. Leaving a bequest to HeartKids will ensure that these services continue to support our children and their families living with congenital heart disease.
A Bequest to HeartKids
For more information please contact Scott Reinke, President of HeartKids Victoria, on (03) 9417 0707 or by email at
Gifts in Memory
A Memorial Donation to HeartKids Victoria is a lasting tribute to the memory of a loved child who has passed away. It is also a meaningful alternative to flowers and gives families and friends the opportunity to support HeartKids in its work to ensure less children are born with heart disease and that mortality rates are improved.

Facts about Childhood Heart Disease
Incidence of Childhood Heart Disease is far greater than most people expect. Although it comes as quite a shock to family and friends alike, an astounding 6 babies each day in Australia are diagnosed with heart disease! Cures remain predominantly unknown and little in general is known about the disease and its causes. Therefore we need your help to assist in addressing this situation
Common known facts about CHD include;
- Heart defects are present in 1 in 100 babies
- Heart defects are the most common birth abnormality
- Heart disease in children is the leading cause of young children death in Australia, accounting for more than 30% of all childhood deaths.
- Childhood Heart Disease takes more lives than all other childhood diseases combined
- Nearly twice as many children die each year from congenital heart disease compared with all childhood cancers
- More than 2015 babies are born in Australia each year with a heart defect
- Childhood heart disease is no fault of the parents or the child. It is simply a result of the cruel hand of fate
- The severity of defects in heart children can range from a hole in the heart, to a highly complex combination of conditions
- Up to 20% of heart defects are gene-linked abnormalities, but for the remaining 80% the cause is largely unknown
- More than half of these conditions are serious enough to require treatment through medication or surgery – sadly some cannot be repaired
- Cures of these heart conditions remains unidentified, therefore there is an immense need to develop early intervention strategies to identify and prevent heart disease in children
- Heart disease is the most common reason for admission of Australian children to intensive care units with more than 1300 being admitted each year
- The term ‘congenital heart defect’ refers to an abnormality of the heart, which is present at birth. It has nothing to do with diet or obesity
- Heart valve replacements come in 3 forms: homographs (valves from humans) tissue valves (from cows or pigs) and mechanical man-made valves
- Some children acquire heart conditions during childhood, eg cardiomyopathy, Kawasaki disease or as a result of rheumatic fever
- A disproportionate number of indigenous children suffer from acquired heart disease – often as a result of rheumatic fever, which is rampant in many communities
- Heart Transplants are much more challenging for children as their immune systems are not fully developed
- The only Paediatric transplant unit in Australia is at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne
More than 4 young Australians will die this week as a result of congenital heart disease. Will you help to save them?

Our Vision
Life unaffected by Childhood Heart Disease.
Our Mission
As the public face of Childhood Heart Disease (“CHD”) and through our active partnering with the medical community and Government, Australia will adopt best practice in the intervention, treatment and support for all those affected.
This will result in a reduction of incidence, decreased mortality, significantly improved quality of life and best outcomes for those affected by CHD.
This will be achieved through our work in support, awareness advocacy and research.
Who we are
HeartKids is a support group for families of children with heart disease, be it congenital (born with) or acquired. We started as voluntary group of parents and individuals dealing with and concerned about the day to day realities of raising and caring for children with cardiac conditions, and sometimes dealing with the loss of a child due to their congenital heart defect. We have grown to an organisation of some strength with a presence in almost every state of Australia, as well as a National body – HeartKids Australia.
Our members wish to offer their support to other families who are in crisis, providing opportunities to share common anxieties and challenges. We arrange, where possible, to meet with other families affected by the impact of life with a child with a cardiac condition and to create a ‘network of support’ for all families.
Over the years, HeartKids Victoria including Tasmania, with the help of members, sponsors and friends, has been able to help out the children’s hospitals by way of donations of money, equipment and research grants.
HeartKids has several regional representatives who offer their time to arrange coffee mornings and special activities in order to support families with a child with congenital heart disease. Telephone support is also offered. Our aim in this area is to ensure that parents aren’t struggling alone.
HeartKids produce seasonal newsletters which update and inform our members on patient progress, special ‘heart family’ activities, government policy, information of relevance, upcoming events and much much more. HeartKids news keeps our geographically diverse membership aware and ‘close’.
HeartKids can assist with information about your hospital stay, for example information on available accommodation, meals, transport and parking. We can also assist with information on the availability of certain hospital services such as social workers, occupational therapists, and speech pathologists.
Most valuable to our families during the crucial time of surgery are our Family Support Co-ordinator in Victoria and our Branch Co-ordinators in Tasmania. These co-ordinators are ‘heart mums’ and understand more than most what families are experiencing during the often tension filled hospital stays.
As well as offering support to families, HeartKids aims to increase awareness in the general community and corporate sector about the high incidence of congenital heart defects and its ongoing consequences.
